FDA Issues Drug Safety Communication:
High Dose Zocor associated with increased risk of muscle injury.
Zocor, or simvastatin, is a statin drug. Statins are used to reduce cholesterol production in the liver and to help clear the blood of LDL, a form of 'bad cholesterol'.
Statins as a class are associated with a risk of muscle injury called myopathy. One serious form of myopathy is called rhadomyolysis or muscle breakdown leading to blood released from the muscles.
In the FDA communication issued March 19, 2010, the FDA reports an increased risk of muscle injury in patients taking the high-end dose of 80 mg of simvastatin for lipid control. The FDA is recommending that patients be aware of this potential side effect but not stop the medication unless they are told to by their medical professional.
