What is the Yaz Birth Control Pill?
How is YAZ different from other birth control pills?
Birth control pills are a combination of estrogen and progesterone designed to prevent ovulation (and thus pregnancy).
YAZ is a combination birth control pill that combines estrogen with a different form of progesterone, called Drospirenone. In some women, Yaz is thought to decrease premenstrual symptoms as well as to improve moderate acne.
Drospirenone is chemically related to the water pill Spironolactone. Spironolactone has anti-androgen side effects.Iit is the anti-androgen (anti-male hormone) effect that may be beneficial to women with acne.
All birth control pills have a potential for side effects and should not be taken without a health care provider’s supervision. Women on birth control pills should also avoid smoking.
YAZ has the potential for side effects from the Drospirenone, including an elevation in the mineral potassium (K+), which can resulted in elevated blood potassium levels called hyperkalemia. Women who are predisposed to hyperkalemia or those on medications that can elevate potassium levels should be especially careful to have their serum potassium level monitored.
Please do not take another person’s medications and be sure to follow up with your medical care provider when you are on any medication, including birth control pills.
