What is Accutane?
Why is Accutane used to treat Acne?
What are some of the potential complications of Accutane?
Accutane wss prescribed for the treatment of cystic acne. Cystic acne is the severe form of acne that causes deep lumps or nodules, boils and abscesses on the face, back and chest. Before accutane became available, patients often had a very long term, chronic course of cystic acne, that resulted in deep scars and was usually resistant to most other acne therapies, including multiple courses of antibiotics.
Accutane is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A. The side effects of Accutane are mainly those of very high doses of Vitamin A. Vitamin A itself, in excess amounts, is toxic to the skin, eyes, bones and liver.
Common Accutane side effects include dry skin and very dry lips.
Less common Accutane side effects may include:
- dry eyes
- hair loss
- achy joints or bones
- elevated triglcerides
- pancreatitis
- depression *
- inflammatory bowel disease*
*Depression and Inflammatory bowel disease remain controversial associations.
Accutane is a known teratogen, meaning it absolutely must not be used if a women is pregnant, might be pregnant, is trying to become pregnant or nursing, due to the high risk of serious birth defects. Patients, doctors prescribing Accutane and pharmacists dispensing Accutane must all comply with the IPledge program restrictions and regulation regarding regular pregnancy testing before and during the course of Accutane.
Remember: Do not take Accutane or isotretinoin without the careful supervision of your health care provider. Never share medication and keep medication out of reach of children.
