Accutane Withdrawn from Market by Roche
Facing a decreased number of prescriptions, increasing generic manufactured competition and numerous lawsuits claiming side effects, Roche has withdrawn Accutane (brand isotretinoin) from the market.
Accutane was a breakthrough drug in the treatment of cystic acne and was first released in 1982. The drug was unique in halting or reversing severe scarring inflammatory acne in patients for whom few if no other medications were successful.
Accutane however
has also been associated with at least the potential for multiple side effects, including teratogenicity, ocular and muscular side effects, elevation of triglycerides, suicidal ideation and most recently, an increased incidence of inflammatory bowel disease.
